Chapter 12

I was born in 1985, February 17th. That makes me an Aquarian. Aquarians are said to be friendly and humanitarian; honest and loyal; original and inventive; independent and intellectual. They are also said to be perverse and unpredictable; unemotional and detached.

I never met my mother. I’ve been told she died when I was very little. I grew up alternately over three time zones: Colorado, New York and California. I went to selective private schools that prided themselves in catering for the educational development of the young minds of wealthy people’s children. After high school, still unsure what I wanted to do with my life, I took a gap year and went to live in Japan.

When I returned to America, I was still unsure what I wanted to do with my life. After long discussions with my father, it was eventually settled that I would study law. I could’ve gone to Harvard or Yale, but I wasn’t interested. I picked the University of Denver because I’d read in a Forbes magazine online article that one of the best cities for young people to live was Denver. Atlanta was appealing too, but a toss of the coin saw me going off to Denver, because that same online article also informed me that because the Sturm College of Law was the only one in the Denver metro area, Denver University law students are better able to pursue internships with some of the firms, corporations and government, including the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit and the United States District Court for the District of Colorado. Spent four years mastering the art of Law, with specialization in Criminal Law. There was something that thrilled me about being a trial lawyer, that’s why I took that route.

Law school was no breeze, but I put in extra hours, for I had points to prove. I did not want to succeed because of my father’s fame or money. I wanted to be my own man; I wanted to prove to him and the world that Brook Kepley could stand on his own two feet and make it on his own. After I graduated 2nd in my class recruiters came knocking. Between 2007 and 2008 I put in twenty hours a day for Soot, Glasscombe & Small in New York. Goodbye to social life. No more free time. The job consumes your life, eats you up as you toil away towards achieving the Holy Grail: becoming a full partner.

Everything you do is about the job and nothing else. It takes thousands of hours to move from the basement to the ground floor. Once there, you have to win cases and make millions for the firm. Every year, hundreds of college graduates sell their souls to the big law firms and get swallowed up in the game of greed, power and corruption. They come from different backgrounds and they come in all manner of rank, size and sex. But they all want one thing: they want to be making at least $400,000 a year by the time they are thirty five.
